Definitions (Senses and Subsenses)

1.
An inseparable prefix or a combining element in verbs, participles, and gerunds and a combining element in nouns and adjectives; the prefix is freq. of OE origin for the verbs, occas. of OE origin for adjectives, but is active in all parts of speech in ME. It is most often used in trans. verbs (most are of motion) and past participles, where the meaning is that of thurgh prep. 1. or thurgh adv. 1. or 3. In intr. verbs, present participles, and gerunds the meaning is that of thurgh adv. 1. or 3.: e.g., thurghcomen, thurghfallen, thurghlasten, thurghrennen (1), thurghsounen, thurghwonen; thurghdrauinge, thurghdroppinge; and thurghkerving. In nouns the meaning is that of thurgh adv. 1. or thurgh adj. (a): thurgh-drivel, thurgh-fare, thurgh-fleer, thurgh-giste, thurgh-hous, thurgh-line, thurgh-tol, thurgh-wale, and thurgh-weies. In adjectives the meaning is that of thurgh adv. 3., often used as an intensive: thurgh-cold, thurgh-drie, thurgh-fin, thurgh-holi, thurgh-hot, thurgh-stif, thurgh-wacol, and thurgh-wet. In verbs, participles, and nouns the prefix often translates L per- (e.g., thurghcomen, thurghgon, thurghhelden, thurghhelen, thurghpassen, thurghserchen, thurghsounen, thurghtreten; thurghdrauinge, thurghdroppinge; thurgh-fleer, thurgh-weies).
