Definitions (Senses and Subsenses)

From that place;—used in contexts suggesting: (a) the motion of the subject away from a place; (b) the separation or relocation from a place of the object of the action; (c) a central point from which activity arises; also, fig. the source of a virtue; a line of descent, stock.

From a specific point or place, away from a place;—used: (a) to identify a location or specify a distance; (b) to indicate the presence or absence of a person or group of persons; also fig. with ref. to God as a place of bliss.

In combs.: ~ forth [OE þanan-forþ], ~ forth-on [may be construed as ~ for-than 'consequently'], ~ forth-ward, from that time on, thenceforth; also, forthwith [last quot.].
