(a) To protect (sb., oneself, sth.) from harm, save, defend; (b) ~ from (with), to protect (sb.) against (sb. or sth.), save (sb.) from (sb. or sth.); -- also refl.; also, ~ from (oute of), free (sb.) from (sth.); (c) to afford protection (against sth.); ~ from (with); (d) to shield (the eyes).
