(a) A drinking party, prob. compulsory, held by a sheriff, forester, bailiff, etc., for which a contribution was exacted; maken ~, to hold such a gathering; (b) a festivity held by a church to raise money; ~ hous, a place where such a festivity was held; (c) a drinking party given for the villagers by the lord after mowing [cp. sithe-ale, s.v. sithe n.(1)(c)].
