Note: Supplemental material. See AND s.v. baterie, 'beating..., threshing..., metal kitchenware.' Also cp. DMLBS s.v. bateria, 'battery (violent attack)..., threshing..., wrought metal (?copper) ware.' Many of the examples are ambiguous as to language; cp. the passage from Foedera cited by DMLBS, 'baterie vulgariter appellato....' MED has taken the examples cited here as English because of the lack of Latin terminations in a Latin context, but they may just as well be regarded as French. Similar examples in Gras pp. 166 and 269 (1303), pp. 367 and 370 (1308-09), and p. 215 (a1400) have clearly or arguably Latin terminations and have therefore not been cited. The example on Gras, p. 695 ('bartry') is dated 1507 and excluded on the grounds of date.
