(a) A graphic variant (usually word initial) of i; phonetically ǧ, as in jape, jeuel, joint, jail (var. of ǧaiole), jemme (var. of ǧemme), etc.; also y, as in jarn (var. of yarn), jelou (var. of yelwe), jena (var. of hiena), etc., and perh. ch, as in jawle (var. of chavel), jerubin (var. of cherubin), etc.; also ī̆, as in jt (var. of hit pron.), jritage (var. of heritāǧe), jdil (var. of īdel), jronne (p.ppl. of irennen), jhad (p.ppl. of haven), etc.; (b) as initial letter of a name; (c) as a variant of i in numerals -- see i n.
