Derivational suffix in words adopted from OF, where it formed diminutives. In ME the diminutive force is preserved in some of the words, but lost in others. (a) With diminutive force, e.g. castel-et small castle (: castel), hach-et hatchet (: hache ax), pok-et pocket (: pōke bag), tǒr-et turret (: tǒur tower); pǒl-et young chicken; (b) without diminutive force: e.g. bacin-et basinet, dǒuc-et sweet dish, fill-et headband, gǒlet gullet, trǒmp-et trumpet.
