Definitions (Senses and Subsenses)
Derivational suffix forming nouns that primarily denote professions or crafts, the practitioners or members of a craft or profession (collectively), the shop of a craftsman, or the products of a craft (collectively), less commonly the characteristics attributed to persons of certain professions or ranks (or to certain animals).

(a) Many nouns in -erīe were adopted from OF (not a few along with the corresponding agent nouns in -re, -iēr, -ǒur): e.g. arch-erīe (and arch-(i)ēr), cheval-erīe (and cheval-ēr), hostel-erīe (and hostel-ēr), jūel-erīe, enchaunt-erīe, trich-erīe; (b) some OF words in -erīe formed on nouns were taken into ME along with their primaries: e.g. fai-erīe fairyland, enchantment (and fai fairy), ribaud-rīe (and ribaud), giu-erīe, jeu-erīe land of the Jews, Jewish quarter (and giu, jeu).

On the model of the many words in -erīe borrowed from OF, others were formed in ME: (a) to go with agent nouns, e.g. begg-erīe: begg-er; hukk-erīe, hukst-erīe: huk-ster; (b) from nouns: dēn-erīe from dēn deacon, dean; nǒnn-erīe from nǒnne nun; husband-rīe, harlot-rīe, fox-erīe foxy behavior.
