Definitions (Senses and Subsenses)

1.
Prefix of verbs, action nouns, and agent nouns in words adopted from OF, e.g. enter-chaunǧen, -comūnen, -dīten, -medlen, -mēten; enter-cǒurs, -dīt, -lūde, -prīse, -mētǒur. The original meaning of the prefix, 'between, among', is clear in those words that were set off against the simplex in ME, as enter-chaunǧen, enter-medlen, but not in others, such as enter-mēten, enter-lūde, enter-dīt. This prefix is not formative in ME. The AF variant anter-, aunter- occurs occasionally, as in a(u)nter-mēten. The synonymous L inter- appears as a variant in inter-dīten, inter-dīt [L inter-dictum] and some other words; on the other hand, enter- often occurs in words that normally have the Latin prefix.
