Inflectional suffix forming the gen.plural of many nouns in very early ME: (a) nouns that formed the gen.pl. in OE -ena, e.g. bēm-ene of trumpets; (b) some nouns that formed the gen.pl. in OE -a, e.g. eorl-ene of earls, freond-ene of friends.
