Inflectional suffix of adjs. in early ME: (a) forming the dat.sg. and the dat.pl. of the indefinite (strong) declension; (b) forming the oblique cases (exc. acc. neuter) of the sing. and all cases of the plural of the definite (weak) declension. This inflection is reduced to -e at an early date and later gradually lost.
