[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter of John R. Briggs, Jr., assistant clerk of the House of Representatives, to Senator James Harlan, March 14, 1865, asking his influence to obtain a pardon for his son William D.

Briggs, who had deserted from Company M, Second Illinois Light Artillery, and enlisted in the Navy in March, 1864. Lincoln's pardon was promulgated in AGO Special Orders No. 156, April 1, 1865.
