[1] AES, DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, NN 1785. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter of Lafayette S. Foster, March 13, 1865, in behalf of John H. Lester, convicted on charges of manufacturing arms for the enemy, endeavoring to give aid and comfort to the enemy, and treasonable and disloyal conduct. He was sentenced to imprisonment at hard labor for ten years and to forfeit all property. Lincoln had referred the papers in this case to Holt on January 12 (DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, NN 1785). See Lincoln to Lorenzo Thomas, March 16, infra.
