Grant replied on January 7: ``In reply to your dispatch of this morning I have to state that Genl Griffin commanding 2nd Division 9th Army Corps telegraphs me that private Waterman Thornton one hundred seventy ninth (179) New York Volunteers was executed yesterday . . . for desertion to the enemy'' (DLC-RTL).
