Annotation

[1]   ALS, DLC-RTL. This letter was returned with endorsements showing that Captain Samuel Ford of the Fifth Maryland Volunteers was charged with permitting persons ``under his command and employ, as detectives, to examine and improperly & unlawfully take & retain from the person and possession of Mrs. Lucy Ann Baggott the sum of $160,'' and that he also had allowed ``two young Ladies [Misses E. L. and S. M. Adams], in the same manner to be relieved of $310.'' Tried before a court-martial on September 17, Ford was acquitted and released from arrest (AGO General Orders No. 343, October 19, 1863).
