[1] AES, DNA WR RG 107, Secretary of War, Personnel Appointments, Box 12. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a memorandum reading ``Augustus C. Hamlin Brigade Surgeon,'' above which Lincoln had written, ``Left by the Vice-President.'' A nephew of the vice-president, Dr. Augustus C. Hamlin was appointed brigade surgeon of Volunteers, April 4, 1862.
