I wish to remember this young man for 1863, & to appoint him, unless there shall be over-bearing reasons to the contrary

Jan. 22, 1862. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the envelope of a letter from Secretary Seward, January 21, 1862, introducing ``Mrs Schermerhorn and her son whom she wishes to put into the Academy at West Point.'' Mrs. Schermerhorn's son, F. Augustus Schermerhorn, was not appointed to West Point. See Lincoln's memorandum of April 1, 1864, infra.
