Annotation
[1] AD, IHi. Lincoln drew up this petition before leaving for Vandalia to attend the legislature, which opened on December 5, 1836, and Coleman Smoot seems from the endorsement which appears on the verso of the document to have procured the fifty-nine signatures, including his own, and presented the petition to the court on December 5. November 30 is conjectured as the approximate date.
