Annotation

[1]   Illinois State Register, January 22, 1841. A burlesque petition had been presented by Asahel Gridley, McLean County Whig, in reference to a speech of Alpheus Wheeler, Democrat of Pike County. In order to place the shoe on the other foot, John A. McClernand, Democrat of Gallatin County, offered a resolution condemning the petition and its presentation by Gridley as insulting to the House. Lincoln's effort was to terminate the affair.
