The online digital collection of the Visual Resources Collections, part of the Department of the History of Art, consists of images representing art and architecture from all eras and geographic regions of cultural history. These images have many different sources: field photography donated by current and emeriti faculty, archival negatives and prints, illustrations digitized from books, 35mm slides and lantern slides, as well as digital images licensed from vendors. Images and cataloging information are added twice weekly to this site as we continue to digitize the precious research of our globe-trotting faculty.

In decades past, the Department of the History of Art initiated several slide distribution projects, which produced sets of 35mm slides of art images. These slide distribution projects are: AAPD (Asian Art Photographic Distribution), ACSAA (American Council for Southern Asian Art), and UMSD (University of Michigan Slide Distribution). Images from the UMSD slide set have since been digitized and are available here. While some AAPD and ACSAA images are also available here, most were digitized by Artstor and are hosted in their image library.

Records from this website with no thumbnail image attached represent analog media that has not been digitized. Most of these text records are cataloging data from images in the Eleanor S. Collins Teaching Collection, which was a slide library used for teaching History of Art courses. Under certain circumstances, we are sometimes able to fulfill digitization requests for these images.

Staff assistance in using this website and preparing presentations is available to University of Michigan faculty and graduate students.

If you have any questions, please contact the Department of the History of Art or call 734.764.0386. Alternatively, use the "Problems / Comments" link from any record to alert us of your image needs.
