The theme of the painting (17th-18th century) is influenced by the legend of the Pandavas ascending to Brahmalok, after having abdicated the throne of Hastinapura. Mahapanth (Great Road), in the Bhagirathi group of peaks, was the path they took in their journey to the heavens. The Ganges in its uppermost snowbound regions leads the way to heaven.
