THE subject to be considered is the Doc∣trine of Laying on of Hands, as exhi¦bited in the xxxi chapter of our Confession of Faith; part of which we will transcribe, viz.
We believe that Laying on of Hands, with prayer, upon baptized believers, as such, is an ordinance of Christ, and ought to be submitted unto by all such persons, that are admitted to partake of the Lord's Supper; and that the end of this ordinance is not for the extraordinary gifts of the Spirit, but for a farther reception of the Holy Spirit of promise; or for the addition of the graces of the Spirit and the influences thereof, to confirm, strengthen, and com∣fort them in Christ Jesus; it being ratified and established by the extraordinary gifts of the Spirit in the primitive times,&c.
It is granted, that an article of faith em∣braced by a church doth not make it truth in itself; but we must conceive that it con∣tains the meaning in which the church re∣ceive the Scripture on that subject. It must therefore argue a degree of precipitance in associated members belonging to indepen∣dent
