¶ The fayth of Abraham is proued in offrynge his sonne Isaac. Chryst our sauiour is promysed. The generacyon of Nachor Abrahams brother.
CAPI. XXII.
[ A] AFter these dedes, God dyd proue A∣braham and sayde vnto hym: Abrahā. And he answered: here am I. And he sayde: take thy only sonne Isaac whom thou louest, and get the vnto the Lande Moria, & sacrifice him there for a sacryfice vppon one of the mountaynes which I wil shewe the. Thē Abraham rose vp early in the mornynge & sad∣led his asse, and toke two of his meyny with hym, and Isaac his sonne: and cloue wod for the sacrifyce, and rose vp and got him to the place whiche God had appoynted him.
The thirde daye Abraham lyft vp his eyes and sawe the place a farre of, and sayde vnto his yonge men: byde here with the asse. I and the lad will go yonder and worshyppe & come agayne vnto you. And Abrahā toke the wood [ B] of the sacrifice, & layd it vpon Isaac his sonne, and toke fyre in his hande and a knyfe. And they went both of them togither.
Than spake Isaac vnto Abraham his fa∣ther and sayde: My father? And he answered here am I my sonne. And he sayde: Se here is fyre and wod, but where is the shepe for sacri∣fice? And Abraham sayde: my sonne, God will prouyde him a shepe for sacrifyce. So wēt they bothe togither.
And when they came vnto the place which God shewed hym, Abraham made an aulter there, and dressed the wod, and bounde Isaac his sonne, and layde hym on the aulter, a∣boue vpon the wod. And Abraham stretched forth his hande, & toke the knyfe to haue kil∣led his sonne. Then the aungell of the Lorde called vnto hym frome heauen sayenge: Abra∣ham Abraham? And he answered: here am I. And he sayde: laye not thy handes vppon the childe, neyther do any thinge at all vnto him, for now I knowe that thou fearest God, in yt thou hast not spared thyne only sonne for my [ C] sake. And Abraham lyfted vp his eyes and lo∣ked aboute: and beholde, there was a ramme caught by the hornes in ye breres. And he wēt and toke the ram and offred hym vp for a sa∣crifice in the steade of his sonne. And Abrahā called the name of the place, the Lorde wyl se: wherfore it is a comen sayenge this daye: in the mount will the Lorde be sene.
And the aungell of the Lorde cryed vnto A∣braham from heauen the second tyme sayeng: by my selfe haue I sworne (sayth the Lord) because thou haste done this thinge and haste not spared thy only sonne, that I will blesse ye & multiply thy seed as the sterres of heauen, & as the sonde vpon the see syde. And thy seed shall possesse the gates of his enemyes. And [ D] in thy seed shall all the nacions of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voyce. So turned Abraham agayne vnto his yonge men, and they rose vp and wente togither to Berseba. And Abraham dwelte at Berseba. And it chaunced after these thinges, that one tolde Abraham sayenge: Beholde, Milca she hath also borne children vnto thy brother Na∣chor: Hus his eldest sonne, and Bus his bro∣ther, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians, and Cesed, and Haso, and Pyldas, and Ied∣laph, and Bethuel. And Bethuel begate Re∣becca. These .viij. dyd Milca bere to Nachor Abrahams brother. And his concubyne called Rheuma she bare also Tebah, Gahā, Thaas and Maacha.
