¶ The vnfaythfulnes of the Iewes. Two maner of ryghtousnes.

CAPI. X.

BRethren, my hertes desyre and prayer to [ A] God for Israel, is, that they myghte be saued. For I beare thē recorde they haue a feruent mynde towardes God, but not ac∣cordynge to knowledge For beyng ignoraunt of the ryghtousnes whiche is alowed before God, and goynge aboute to stablysshe theyr owne ryghtousnes they are not obedient vn∣to the ryghtousnes whiche is of value before God. For Chryste is the ende of the lawe, to iustyfye all that beleue.

Moses descrybeth the ryghtousnes which commeth of the lawe, that the man whiche doth the thinges of the lawe, shal lyue therin. But the rightousnes which cōmeth of fayth, speaketh on this wyse: Say not in thine hert, [ B] who shall ascende in to heauen (that is no∣thynge els then to fetche Chryst downe) Ey∣ther who shal descende in to the depe? (that is nothynge elles but to fetche vp Chryst frome deathe.) But what sayth the scrypture? The

worde is nyghe the, euen in thy mouth and in thyne herte.

This worde is the worde of faithe whiche we preache. For if thou shalt knowlege with thy mouth that Iesus is the Lorde, and shalt beleue with thyne hert, that God raysed him vp frome deathe thou shalt be safe. ✚ For y^e belefe of the hert iustifieth, and to knowlege with the mouth, maketh a man safe. For the scripture saith: Who so euer beleueth on him shall not be asshamed.

[ C] There is no difference betwene the Iewe & the Gentyle. For one is Lorde ouer all, whi∣che is ryche vnto al that cal on him. For who so euer shall call on the name of the Lorde, shalbe safe. But how shall they call on hym, on whome they beleued not? how shall they beleue on him, of whom they haue not herde? how shal they heare without a preacher? And how shall they preache except they be sent? As it is written: * Howe beautyfull are the fete of them, whiche brynge glad tydinges of peax, and brynge glad tydinges of good thin¦ges. But they haue not all obeyed the Gos∣pell. For Esay sayth: Lorde who shall be∣leue oure sayenges? So then faith commeth by hearynge, and hearynge, by the worde of God, But I aske: haue they not herde? No doubte, their sounde wente oute into all landes: and their wordes into the endes of y^e worlde. ⊦

But I demaunde / whether Israell dyd knowe or not? First Moses sayth: I will prouoke you to enuy, by them that are no peo¦ple, and by a folyshe nacion I wil anger you. Esay after that, is bolde, and sayth: I am founde of them that sought me not, and haue appered to theym, that asked not after me. And against Israel he sayth: All daye longe haue I stretched forth my handes vnto a peo∣ple that beleueth not, but speaketh againste me.
