¶ The preachynge, baptysme, and prysonmente of Iohn. The baptysme of Chryste / and a rehersall of the generacion of the fathers.

[ A] I✚N the fyftene yere of the raygne of Tibe∣rius Themperour, Pontius Pilate beyng rular of Iury, and Herode beyng Tetrarch of Galile, and his brother Philip, Tetrarche in Iturea, and in the region of Traconites, & Lysania the Tetrarche of Abyline, when An∣na and Cayphas were the hyghe Prestes, the worde of God came vnto Iohn̄ the sonne of Zachary, in the wyldernes. And he came into all the coostes about Iordan, preachinge the Baptysme of repentaunce for the remission of synnes, as it is wryten in the boke of the say∣enges of Esay the Prophete, which sayth. The voyce of a cryar in wyldernes: prepare ye waye of the Lorde, make his pathes straight. Euery valley shalbe fylled, and euery moun∣tayne and hyl, shalbe brought lowe. And cro∣ked thinges shalbe made streight: & the rough wayes shalbe made smooth: and all flesh shal se the sauour sent of God. ⊦
[ B] Then sayd he to the people that were come to be baptised of hym. O generacion of vypers who hath taught you to flee frome the wrath to come? Brynge forthe due frutes of repen∣taunce, and begyn not to saye in your selues, we haue Abraham to oure father. For I saye vnto you: God is hable of these stones / to reyse vp children vnto Abraham. Now also is the axe layde vnto the rote of the trees: so that euery tre which bringeth not forth good trute is hewen downe, and cast into the fyre.
And the people asked hym, sayenge: what shall we do then? He answered, and sayde to them: He that hath two cotes, let him parte [ C] with him that hath none: and he that hathe meate, let him do lykewyse.
Then came also publicans to be baptised, & sayde vnto hym: Master, what shall we do? And he sayde vnto them: tolle no more then that which is appoynted vnto you.
The soudyours lykewyse demaunded of hym, sayenge: and what shall we do? And he sayde vnto them. Oppresse you no man: ney∣ther sklaunder any man: but be content with your wages.
As the people were in a doure, and all men disputed in their hertes of Iohn̄, whether he were very Christ: Iohn̄ aunswered and sayd to them all: I baptyse you with water, but a stronger then I cometh after me, whose shoe latcher I am not worthy to vnlouse: he will baptyse you with the holy ghooste, and with fyre: who hath his fanne in his hande, & will purge his flore, and will gather the corne into his barne: but the chaffe will he burne with fyre vnquencheable. And many other thyn∣ges in his exhortation, preached he vnto the people.
Then Herode the Tetrarch (when he was [ D] rebuked of him for Herodias his brother Phi¦lippes wyfe, and for all the euyls whiche He∣rode had done) put this to aboue all other e∣uyls, and put Iohn̄ in pryson.
And it befelle as all the people receyued baptysme (and when Iesus was baptysed, & dyd praye) the heauen was opened, and the holy ghost came downe in a bodely shape lyke a doue vpon hym, and a voyce came from hea∣uen sayenge: Thou arte my dere sonne, in the do I desyre.
And Iesus hym selfe was begynnynge as [ E] about thirty yere of age, as was supposed the sonne of Ioseph: Whiche was of Heli:
