[ A] A✚Nd he arose from thence and went in to the costes of Iury, through the re∣gyon that is beyonde Iordane. And the people resorted vnto hym a fresshe, and as he was wont, he taught them agayne. And the Pharysees came and asked hym a questyon: whether it were lauful for a man to put away his wyfe, temptynge hym. And he answered and sayd vnto them: what dyd Moses dyd you do? And they sayde: Moses suffred to wryte a testimonyall of deuorsement, and to put her awaye. And Iesus answered and sayd vnto them: For the hardnes of your hertes he wrote this precepte vnto you. But at the fyrste creacion God made them man and wo∣man. For this cause shall man leaue his fa∣ther and mother, and stycke to his wyfe, and they twayne shall be one flesshe. So then are they now not twayne, but one flesshe. Ther∣fore what God hath coupled, let not man de∣parte.

[ B] And in the house his discyples asked hym agayne of that mater. And he sayd vnto them. Who so euer putteth away his wyfe and ma∣ryeth an other, is an aduoutrer to herwarde. And yf a woman forsake her husbande and be maried to an other, she committeth aduoutry. And they brought chyldren to hym that he sholde touche them. And his discyples rebu∣ked those that brought them. When Iesus saw that, he was displeased and said to them: Suffre the chyldren to come vnto me, and for∣byd them not. For of suche is the kyngdome of God. Veryly I saye vnto you, who so euer shall not receyue the kyngdome of God as a chylde, shal not enter therin. And he toke them vp in his armes, & put his handes vpon them, and blessed them. ⊦

And when he was come in to the way there came one runnynge and kneled to hym, and asked him: Good master, what shal I do that I may inheryte euerlastynge lyfe? Iesus said to him: why callest thou me good? There [ C] is no man good but one, which is God. Thou knowest the commaundementes. Do no ad∣uoutry, kyll not, steale not, bere no false wyt∣nes, defraude no man, honour thy father and mother. He answered and said to him. Master all these I haue kepte from my youth. Iesus beheld him, and had a fauour to hym, and said vnto hym: one thynge is lackynge vnto the. Go and sell all that thou hast, and gyue to the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in he∣uen, and come and folowe me, and take vp the crosse. But he was discomforted with that sayinge, and wente awaye mournynge, for he had great possessions.

And Iesus loked rounde aboute, and sayd vnto his discyples: what an harde thynge is it for them that haue ryches to entre in to the kyngdome of God. And his discyples were a∣stonyed at his wordes. But Iesus answered agayne, and sayde vnto them: chyldren howe [ D] harde is it for them that trust in ryches to en∣tre in to the kyngdome of God? It is easyer for a camell to go throughe the eye of a nedle, then for a ryche man to entre in to the kyng∣dome of God. And they were astonyed out of measure, sayinge bytwene them selues: who then can be saued? Iesus loked vpon them, and sayde: with men it is impossible, but not with God, for with God all thynges are pos∣sible.

And Peter began to saye vnto hym: Lo, [ E] we haue forsaken all, and haue folowed the. Iesus answered and sayd: Truly I tell you, there is no man that forsaketh house, or bre∣thren or systers, or father or mother, or wyfe or chyldren, or landes for my sake and the gospels which shall not receyne an hundred folde now in this tyme: houses and brethren and sisters, and mothers and chyldren, and landes with persecucions: and in the worlde to come euer∣lastynge lyfe. Many fyrst, shall be laste / and the last, fyrst. And they were in the waye go∣yng vp to Ierusalem. And Iesus went before them, and they were amased, and as they fo∣lowed, were afrayde.

And Iesus toke the .xij. agayne, and began to tell them what thynges shold happen vnto hym. Beholde we go vp to Ierusalem, and the sonne of man shall be delyuered vnto the hyghe preestes, and vnto the Scrybes: and they shall condemne hym to deathe, and shall delyuer hym to the heathen: and they shall mocke hym, and scourge hym, and spytte vpon hym, and kyll hym. And the thyrde daye he shall ryse agayne.

And then Iames and Iohn̄ the sonnes Ze∣bede came vnto hym, sayinge: Master, we wold thou sholdest do for vs what so euer we desyre. He sayde vnto them: What wolde ye I sholde do vnto you? They sayde to hym: Graunt vs we may syt, one on thy right hand and the other on thy lefte hande, in thy glory. But Iesus sayd vnto them, ye wote not what Ie aske. Can ye drynke of the cup that I shall drinke of, and be baptised in the baptisme that I shall be baptysed in? And they sayde vnto hym: we can. Iesus sayd them: ye shal drinke of the cup that I shall drynke of, and be bap∣tised [ F] with the baptysme that I shall be bap∣tised in, but to syt on my ryght hande & on my lefte hande is not myne to gyue, but to them for whom it is prepared.

And when the .x. herd that, they began to disdayne at Iames and Iohn̄. But Iesus cal∣led them vnto him, & sayd to them: ye knowe that they whiche seme to bere rule among the gētyles, raygne as lordes ouer them. And they that be greate amonge them, exercyse aucto∣ritie ouer them. So shal it not be among you, but who so euer of you wyll be great amonge you, shall be your seruaunt. And who so euer wyll be chiefe, shall be seruaunt vnto all. For euē the sonne of man came not to be ministred vnto: but to ministre, and to gyue his lyfe for [ G] the redemption of many.

And they came to Hirrico. And as he went out of Hierico with his disciples, and a great nombre of people: Barthimeus the sonne of Thimeus whiche was blynde, sate by the hye wayes syde, beggyng. And when he herde that it was Iesus of Nazareth, he began to cry and to saye: Iesus the sonne of Dauid, haue mercy on me. And many rebuked hym, that he sholde

holde his peace. But he cryed the more a great deale, thou sonne of Dauid haue mercy on me: And Iesus stode styll, and commaunded hym to be called. And they called the blynde, saying vnto hym: Be of good comforte: aryse, he calleth the. And he threwe awaye his cloke, and rose and came to Iesus. And Iesus an∣swered and sayd vnto hym: what wylte thou that I do vnto the? The blynde sayde vnto hym: Master, that I myght se. Iesus sayd vn∣to hym: Go thy waye, thy faythe hath saued the. And anone be receyued his syght, and fo∣lowed Iesus in the waye.
