¶ Of the captyuytye of Israel and Iuda.

CAPI. VII.

[ A] THe Lorde God shewed me suche a vy∣sion: beholde there stode one that made greshoppers, euen when the corne was shotinge forth, after the kynge had clypt his shepe.

Nowe when they vndertoke to eate vp al the grene thynges in the lande, I sayde: O Lorde God, be mercyfull I beseche the: who shoulde elles helpe vp Iacob that is brought so lowe? So the Lorde was gracious therin, and the Lorde sayde: well, it shall not be. Agayn the Lorde shewed me this vision: be∣holde, the Lorde God called the fyre to pu∣nysshe withall, and it deuouted the greate depe: yea it consumed a parte alredye. Then sayd I: O Lorde God, holde thyne hande: for who shoulde elles helpe vp Iacob that is brought so lowe? So the Lorde was in mercy∣full therin, and the Lorde God sayd: well, it shall not be.

[ B] Moreouer he shewed me this vysyon: Beholde, the Lorde stode vpon a pla••••ced walle, and a masons trowell in his ••ande. And the Lorde sayd vnto me: Amo••, what seest thou? I aunswered: a mason•• ••rowell. Then sayde the Lorde: Beholde, I wyll laye the trowell amonge my people of Is∣raell, and wyll no more ouers••e theym: but the hyghe hyll chapelles of Isaac muste be layde waste, and the churches of Israell made desolate, and as for the home of Ie∣roboam, I wyll stande vp agaynst it with the swerde.

[ C] Vpon this sente Amasiah the Preest to Bethel, vnto Ieroboam the kynge of Israel, sayinge: Amos maketh the house of Israell to rebell agaynste the, the lande cannot a∣waye with his wordes. For Amos sayth, Ie∣roboam shall dye with the swerde, and Is∣rael shall be led awaye captyue oute of theyr owne lande.

And Amasiah sayde vnto Amos: Get the hence (thou that canste se so well) and flee in to the land of Iuda: get the there thy liuing and prophecye there, and prophecye no more at Bethel, for it is the kynges chapell, & the kynges couete.

[ D] Amos aunswered and sayde to Amasiah: As for me, I am neyther Prophete ne Pro∣phetes sonne, but a keper of cattell. Now as I was breakynge downe mulberyes, and go∣ynge after the cattell, the Lorde toke me, and sayde vnto me: God thy waye and prophe∣cye vnto my people of Israell. And therfore heare thou now the word of the Lord: Thou sayest: prophecye not agaynste Israell, and speake nothynge agaynste the house of Isaac. Wherfore thus sayth the Lorde: Thy wyfe shall de defyled in the citye, thy sonnes and doughters shall be slayne with the swerde, and thy lande shall be measured out with the lyne. Thou thy selfe shalte dye in an vnclene lande, and Israell shall be dryuen out of his owne countrey.
