¶ Dauid wylleth his sonne Salomon to buylde the temple of the Lorde: whiche thynge he hym selfe was forbydden to do.
CAPI. XXII.
[ A] ANd Dauid commaunded to gather the straungers that were in the lande of Is¦raell, and set hewers to hewe stone, to buylde the house of God. And Dauid prepa∣red plentye of yron for nayles to the dores of the gates, and to ioyne with all, and aboun∣daunce of brasse without wayght, and of Ce∣dar trees without nombre. For the Zidons & they of Tire brought moche Cedar woode to Dauid. For Dauid thus thought, Salomon my sonne is young and tender, and the house that is to be buylte for the Lorde, muste ex∣cede [ B] in greatnesse, that it maye be spoken of and praysed in al landes. I wil therfore make ordinaunce for it. And so Dauid made greate prouision before his death.
And he called Salomon his sonne and char¦ged him to buylde an house for the Lord God of Israel: And Dauid sayde to Salomon: my sonne, I hadde in myne hert to buylde an house vnto the name of the Lorde my God. But the worde of the Lorde came to me say∣enge: thou hast shed moche bloude, and haste made many battelles. Thou shalt not buylde an housse for my name, for as moche as thou hast shed so moche bloude to the earthe in my sight. Beholde a sonne shalbe borne the, whi∣che shalbe a man of reste, for I will gyue him rest frome all his ennemyes roundabout. And his name shalbe Salomon: for I wil send rest and peax vpon Israell in his dayes. He shall buylde an house for my name, & he shalbe my sonne, and I will be his father, and will stablysshe the seate of his kyngdome vpon Is¦raell [ C] for euer. Nowe my sonne, the Lorde be with the, that thou mayst prospere & buylde the house of the Lorde thy God, as he hathe sayde of the. And the Lorde gyue the wysdom and vnderstandinge, and make the gouerner of Israel, and to kepe the lawe of the Lorde thy God. For then thou shalte prospere: Yf thou shalt be diligent to do the ordinaunces and lawes whiche the Lorde charged Moses with, to delyuer to Israell. Plucke vp thyne hert and be stronge, drede not nor be discoura¦ged. Beholde in myne aduersite I haue prepa¦red for the house of the Lord an hundred thou¦sande talentes of gold, and a thousand thou∣sand talentes of siluer, and as for brasse & yrō it can not be numbred, it is so moche. And I haue prepared tymbre and stone, & thou shalt prouyde more therto. Moreouer thou haste [ D] workemen ynoughe and masons and carpen∣ters to worke in stone and tymbre, and al ma¦ner of wyse men for whatsoeuer worke it be. And of golde siluer, brasse and yron there is no numbre. Aryse therfore and set vpon it, & the Lorde shalbe with the.
And Dauid commaunded al the Lordes of Israel, to helpe Salomon his sonne sayeng, Is not the Lorde youre God with you? and hath he not gyuen you rest on euery syde? for he hath gyuen thinhabitauntes of the lande into myne hande, and the land is subdued be∣fore the Lorde and before his people. Nowe therfore set youre hertes and youre soules, to seke the Lorde your God. And aryse & buylde ye the temple of the Lord God, to bringe the arcke of the couenaunt of the Lorde, and the holy vesselles of God into the house so buylt for the name of the Lorde.
