¶ Wycked Manasies restoreth agayne the Idol∣les, and a••ter dyeth, in whose stede Amon his sonne succedeth, whiche is kylled of his owne seruaunt••••▪ After him raygneth ••ay••hfull Iosias.
MAnasses was twelue yeres olde when he began to raygne and raygned fyf••ye [ A] and fyue yeres in Ierusalem: his mo∣ers name was Haphzibah. And he dyd that
displeased the Lorde, euen after the abomina¦cions of the heythen which the Lorde threw out before the children of Israel. And he wēt and buylt the hyllaulters agayne, whiche E∣zechias his father had destroyed. And he rered vp aulters to Baal and made groues, as dyd Achab kynge of Israell. And he bowed him selfe vnto all the hoste of heauen and serued them. And he buylt aulters in the very house of the Lorde, of which the Lorde had sayde: in Ierusalem I wyll put my name, And he buylt alteres vnto all the host of heuen, euen in two courtes of the house of the Lord. And he offered his sonne in fyre, and obserued dis∣mal dayes, and vsed witchcraft and mayntay¦ned workers with spirites, and tellers of for∣tunes: and wrought moche wyckednesse in ye syght of the Lorde to angre him.
[ B] And he put an Ymage of a groue that he had made, euen in the verye temple of whi∣che the Lorde hadde sayde to Dauid and to Salomon his sonne, in this house and in Ierusalem whiche I haue chosen oute of all trybes of Israel, wyll I put my name for e∣uer. Neyther wyll I make the fete of Israell moue anye more oute of the lande whiche I gaue theyr fathers: so that they wyll be dy∣lygent to do all I haue commaunded them, and all the lawe that my seruaunte Moses commaunded them. But they herkened not: for Manasses had led them out of the waye, to doo more wickedlye then dyd the Panyms which the Lorde destroyed before the face of the children of Israel.
And the Lorde spake by his seruauntes the Prophetes sayenge: because Manasses kynge of Iuda hathe done suche abominacions, and hath wroughte wyckedly aboue all that the Amorites which were before him dyd: & hathe made Iuda synne also with his Ydoles: ther∣fore thus sayth the Lorde God of Israell. [ C] Beholde, I will bringe suche euell vpon Ierusalem and Iuda, that the eares of all ye heare it, shall tyngle at it. And I will stretche ouer Ierusalem the squarynge lyne of Sama¦ria and the plometh of the house of Achab. And I will wype oute Ierusalem, as a man wolde wype a dysshe, and when he hath wy∣ped it turneth it vpsetdowne. And thoughe I leue a remnaunt of myne enheritaunce, yet I will delyuer theym into the handes of theym that hate them, and they shall be robbed and spoyled of all their ennemyes: euen because they haue done wyckedly and haue angred me sythens the tyme their fathers came oute of Egypte vnto this daye. And moreouer Ma∣nasses shed innocent bloude excedinge aboun∣dauntly, in so moche that he replenysshed Ie∣rusalem in all corners, besyde his synne wher∣with he made Iuda synne and to doo euyll in the sight of the Lorde. The rest of the actes of Manasses and all he dyd and his synne that he synned, are written in the boke of Chroni∣cles [ D] of kynges of Iuda. And Manasses layde him to slepe with his fathers, and was bury∣ed in the garden of his owne house, euen in ye garden of Oza: and Amon his sonne raygned in his steade.
Amon was .xxij. yeres olde when he began to raygne, and he raygned two yeres in Ieru¦salem. His mothers name was Mesalemeth the doughter of Haru of Iathbah. And he did that displeased the Lorde as his father Ma∣nasses did. He walked in all the way that his father walked in, and serued the Idoles that his father serued, and bowed hym selfe to theym. And he forsoke the Lorde God of his fathers, and walked not in the waye of the Lorde.
And the seruauntes of Amon conspired a∣gainst hym, and slue him in his owne house. But the people of the lande slue all that cō∣spired agaynst kynge Amon, and made Iosias his sonne kynge in his rowme. The reste of ye actes of Amon whiche he dyd are wrytten in the Chronicle of ye kynges of Iuda And they buryed him in his sepulchre in the garden of Oza, and Iosias his sonne raygned in his steade.
