¶ The ten commaundementes of the lawe. No I∣mage maye be made.
CAPI. V.
ANd Moses called all Israel, and sayde [ A] vnto them: Heare (Israel) the ordy∣naunces and lawes whiche I speake in thyne eares this daye, and lerne them, and se ye do them. The Lorde out God made an ap∣pointment with vs in Horeb. The Lord made not this bonde with oure fathers, but with vs: we are they whiche are al here alyue this daye. The Lorde talked with you face to face in the mount out of the fyre. And I stode bytwene the Lorde and you the same tyme, to shewe you the sayinge of the Lorde. For ye were afrayde of the fire, and therfore went not vp in to the mounte, and he sayd. I am the Lorde thy God, whiche brought the oute of the lande of Egypte the house of bondage. Thou shalt haue therfore none other goddes in my presence.
Thou shalte make the no grauen ymage of anye maner lykenesse that is in heuen aboue, or in erht benethe, or in the water benethe the erth. Thou shalt neyther bowe thy selfe vn∣to them nor serue them: for I the Lorde thy God am a gelouse God, visitinge the wicked∣nesse of the fathers vpon the chyldren, euen in the thyrde and fourthe generacyon, amonge them that hate me: and shewe mercye vpon thousandes amonges them that loue me, and kepe my commaundementes.
Thou shalte not take the name of the Lorde thy God in vayne: For the Lorde wil not holde him gyltlesse that taketh his name in vayne.
Kepe the Saboth daye, that thou san∣tifye it, as the Lorde thy God hath commaun¦ded the. Sixe dayes thou shalte laboure, and do [ B] all that thou hast to do, but the seuenth daye is the Saboth of the Lorde thy God: thou shalte doo no maner worke, neyther thou not thy sonne, nor thy daughter, nor thy seruaunt, nor thy mayde, ••or thyne oxe, nor thyne asse, nor any of thy catell, nor the straunger that is within thy citye, that thy seruaunte and thy mayde may rest as well as thou. And remem∣bre thou waste a seruaunt in the lande of E∣gypte, and how that the Lorde God brought the oute thence with a myghtye hande, and a stretched oute arme. For whiche cause the Lorde thy God commaunded the to kepe the Saboth daye.
Honoure thy father and thy mother, as he Lorde thy God hathe commaunded the: that thou mayst prolonge thy dayes, and that it maye go well with the on the lande whiche the Lorde thy God gyueth the.
Thou shalte not commyt aduoutrye.
Thou shalt not steale.
Thou shalt not beare false witnesse against thy neyghboure.
Thou shalt not luste after thy neyghbours wyfe: thou shalte not couet thy neyghbours house, felde, seruaūt, mayde, oxe, asse, nor ought that is thy neyghbours.
These wordes the Lorde spake vnto all youre multitude in the mounte, oute of the fyre, cloude, and darkenesse, with a loude voyce, and added no more therto, and wrote them in two tables of stone, and delyuered them vnto me.
But as soone as ye herde the voyce, oute of [ C]
