The .x. Chapter.

HAd he called his .xii. disciples vnto hym, and gaue them power ouer vncleane spirites, to cast them out, and to heale all maner of sickenes∣ses and all maner diseases.

These .xii. dyd Iesus sead, and commaunded them, saying: Go not into the wayes that leade to Gentiles, and into the cities of the Samaritanes enter ye not but go rather to the loste shepe of the house of Israell. God and preache saying: that the

kyngdome of heauen is at hande. Heale the sicke, clense the Lepers, tayse the deade, cast out the de∣••••ls. Frelyepe haue receyued, frelye geue agayne. Possesse not golde nor syluer, nor brasse in youre girdel, nor yet scrip towardes your ioutneye, nei∣ther two coates, neither shoes, nor yet a staffe. For the workeman is worthy to haue his meate.

Into whatsouer citie or toune ye shal come, enquyre who is worthy in it, and there abyde tyll pego thence. And when ye come in a house, salute thesame, and yf the house be worthye, youre peace shall come vpon it: but if it be not worthye your peace shall retourne to you agayne. And whosoe∣uer shall not receiue you, nor wil heare your prea∣ching, when ye departe out of that house or that citie, shake of the duste of your feete. Truly I saye vnto you, it shalbe easier for the lande of Zo∣doma and Gomorrain the daye of iudgement, the for that citie.

Beholde I sende you forthe as shepe among wolues. Be ye therfore wyse as serpenter, and in∣nocent as doues. Beware of menne, for they shal deliuer you vp to the counsels, and shal scourge you in theyr Synagoges. And ye shall be brought to the head rulers and kynges for my sake, in witnesse to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliuer you vp, take no thoughte howe or what ye shall speake, for it shalbe geuen you euen in the same houre, what ye shall saye. For it is not ye that speake, but the spirite of youre father whiche speaketh in you.

The brother shall betraye the brother to death, and the father the sonne. And the children shall arise agaynste theyre fathers and mothers, and shall put them to death: and ye shall be hated of al men for my name: but he that endureth to then d shalbe saued.

When they persecute you in one Citye, flie in∣to to an other.

The disciple is not aboue his maister, nor yet the seruaunt aboue his Lorde. It is inough for the disciple to be as his maister is, & that the ser∣uante he as his Lorde is, if they haue called the Lorde of the house Beelzebub: howe much more shall they call them of the housholde so?

There is nothynge so close that shall not be opened, and nothing so hydde, that shall not be knowen.

And feare ye not them which kyl the bodye, and be not able to kyl the saule: But rather feare hym which is able to destroy both soule and body into hell.

Whosoeuer shall knowelege me before men, hym wil I knowlege also before my father which is in heauen. But whosoeuer shall denye me be∣fore menne, hym will I also denye before my fa∣ther whiche is in heauen.

Thinke not, that I am come to sende peace in to the earthe: I am not come to sende peace, but a swearde. For I am come to set a man at variaūce againste his father, and the doughter agaynst her mother, and the doughter in lawe against her mo∣ther in lawe: And a mannes fooes shalbe they of his owne householde.

He yt loueth his father, or mother more then me, is not mete for me. And he that loueth his sonne, or doughter more then me, is not mete for me: And he that taketh not his crosse and foloweth me, is not mete for me. He that fyndeth his lyfe, shall lose it: and he that loseth his lyfe for my sake, shall finde it.

He that receaueth you, receyueth me: and he that receyueth me, receyueth hym that sent me, he that receyueth a prophet in the name of a pro∣phete,

shall receaue a prophetes rewarde: and he that receaueth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shal receaue the rewarde of a righ∣teous man. And whosoeuer shall geue vnto one of these lyties ones to dryncke a cuppe of colde wa∣ter onely in the name of a disciple: I tell you of a trueth, he shall not lose his rewarde.
