§. 2.

Before thou prayest (saith Sirach) pre∣pare thy selfe therevnto; least thou bee as one that tempteth the Lord.

For, prayer is like a shippe in the Sea, which if it be good, saueth all that is there∣in; but if it be naught, it suffereth them to perrish.

First therefore, ere thou beginnest to pray vnto GOD, examine thy selfe what thou intendest to aske; & cast away from thee (with a repentant hart) all thy former iniquities: then call vpon him with a lowly and humble spirit; and hee will assuredlie heare thee; releeue thy necessity; quiet thy conscience; and most ioyfully comfort thee.
