¶How curyosyte ought to be eschewed

AN holy man sayd that a good relygyous persone ought not to demaunde how that one ly∣ueth / ne how lyueth that other / to the ende that by the answeres that he shol¦de here / he be not withdrawen fro ho∣ly prayer. And therfor to be more sure / he ought to be stylle & saye nothyng. ¶A brother demaūded of his abbot / yf ony come in to my celle / that to me recoūteth vayne wordes & vnprouffy∣table / ought I to saye to hym / that he be stylle. The holy man answered. Ne saye to hym nothyng / for yu mayst not kepe hȳ fro spekyng / ne thy selfe some tyme. And therfor we ought not to re∣preue our neyghbour of a vyce / in whi¦che we falle after. Thenne sayd ye bro∣ther / what ought thenne to be doon. The holy man answered / yf we wyll do well / we ought to gyue good exam∣ple to our neyghbour / for the good ex∣ample is of more grete effecte / than ben the wordes.
