PAulinus was consecrated the firsta Arch-bi∣shop of York A. D. 625. who having con∣verted Edwyn King of the Northumbers to the Christian saith, built a small Church here to the honour of St. Peter. This being destroyed by the Danes, Thomas the first Norman Arch-bishop A. D. 1067. laid the foundation of the stately Cathe∣dral now standing.

Here were Culdees in the Church of St. Peter A. D. 936. at which time King Aethelstan en∣dowed it with lands; but after the Conquest it became a Priory of Black Canons and an Hos∣pital: the Church being rebuilt by King Stephen,

it was by him dedicated to St. Leonard. The foundation consisted of a Master, thirteen Bre∣thren, four Secular Priests, eight Sisters, thirty Choristers, two Schoolmasters, two hundred and six Beadmen, and six Servitorsc. The revenues (26. Hen. VIII.) amounted to 362l. 11s. 1d. ob. per an.
