A. D. 787. King Offa built a Nunnery here, and about ten years after, King Kenwulf said the foundation of a stately Abby for three hun∣dred Black Monks, and commended it to the Patronage of St. Mary and St. Kenelm. In suc∣ceeding times it became a College of Seculars; but Oswald Bishop of Worcester A. D. 985. re∣stored again the Benedictines. It was rated 26. H. VIII. at 759l. 11s. 9d. per an.
