Annotations upon the Holy Bible. Vol. II wherein the sacred text is inserted, and various readings annex'd, together with the parallel scriptures, the more difficult terms in each verse are explained, seeming contradictions reconciled, questions and doubts resolved, and the whole text opened : being a continuation of Mr. Pool's work by certain judicious and learned divines.

CHAP. III.

1 FOR this cause x I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ y † for you Gentiles z;

2 If ye have heard a of the dispensation of the grace of God b which is given me to you-ward c.

3 How that by revelation d † he made known unto me the mystery e (‖ as I wrote a∣fore f in few words;

4 Whereby when ye reade g ye may under∣stand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ

5 Which in other ages h was not made known unto the sons of men i, as it is now re∣vealed unto his holy apostles and prophets k by the Spirit l.

6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs m, and † of the same body n, and ‖ partakers of his promise o in Christ p by the gospel q.

7 Whereof I was made a Minister according to the gift of the grace of God r, given unto me by the † effectual working of his power s.

8 Unto me who am less than the least of all Saints t is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearcheable riches of Christ u.

9 And to make all men x see y what is the fellowship of the mystery z which from the be∣ginning of the world hath been hid in God a, † who created all things by Jesus Christ b:

10 To the intent that now unto the princi∣pallities and powers in heavenly places c c, might be known by the Church d the manifold wise∣dom of God e.

13 Wherefore I desire n that ye faint not at my tribulations for you o, which is your glory p.

14 For this cause q I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

16 That he would grant unto you according to the riches of his glory x, to be strengthned with might y by his Spirit z in the inner man a:

17 That Christ b may dwell in your hearts c by faith d; that ye being rooted and ground∣ed in love e.

18 May be able to comprehend f with all saints g, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height h.

19 And to know i the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge k, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God l.

20 Now unto him m that is able to doe ex∣ceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think n, according to the power that worketh in us o.

There is no small difference among Expositours about the connexion of these words; the fairest and easiest seems to be: Either 1. that the Substantive Verb am be here sup∣plied, and the words read, I Paul am the Prisoner of Jesus Christ, q. d. I have for some time been and still am the Pri∣soner of Jesus Christ. Or 2. that this Verse be joined to the 14. (all the rest from v. 2. to the 13. being included in a Parenthesis) where he begins with the same word as here, and so we may reade it thus, v. 1. For this cause I Paul the prisoner, &c. and then v. 14. I say, For this cause I bow my knees, &c. viz. praying that ye may be strength∣ned with might by his Spirit. &c. i. e. That they might be more and more built up on Christ on whom they were foun∣ded, and had begun to be built.
