CHAP. IX.

NOW in the twenty and fourth day of this month a 1.1, the children of Israel were assemb∣led with fasting, and with sackcloths, and with earth up∣on them.

And * 1.2 the seed of Israel separated themselves from all † 1.3 strangers b 1.4, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers c 1.5.

And they stood up in their places, and read in the book of the law d 1.6 of the LORD their God, one fourth part of the day e 1.7, and another fourth part they confes∣sed f 1.8, and worshipped the LORD their God g 1.9.

Then stood up upon the ‖ 1.10 stairs of the Levites h 1.11, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebi∣ah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice i 1.12 unto the LORD their God.

Then the Levites, Jeshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah▪ Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pe∣thahiah, said k 1.13, stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever l 1.14; and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Thou, even thou art LORD alone, * 1.15 thou hast made heaven, the * 1.16 heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are therein, the seas and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all, and * 1.17 the host of heaven m 1.18 worshippeth thee.

Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose * 1.19 Abram n 1.20, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of * 1.21 Abraham.

And foundest his heart * 1.22 faithful before thee o 1.23▪ and madest a * 1.24 covenant with him, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Periz∣zite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words, for thou art righteous.

* 1.25 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Ae∣gypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea:

And * 1.26 shewedst signs and wonders upon Phara∣oh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them p 1.27: so didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.

* 1.28 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the * 1.29 mighty waters q 1.30.

Moreover, thou * 1.31 leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar, and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

* 1.32 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and † 1.33 true laws r 1.34: good s 1.35 statutes and com∣mandments.

And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath t 1.36▪ and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

And * 1.37 gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and * 1.38 broughtest forth water for them out of the rock, for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should * 1.39 go in to possess the land, * 1.40 which thou hadst •…•…worn to give them.

But u 1.41 they and our fathers dealt proudly x 1.42, and hardned their neck, and hearkned not to thy command∣ments.

And refused to obey y 1.43, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them: but harde∣ned their necks, and in their rebellion † 1.44 appointed * 1.45 a captain z 1.46, to return to their bondage: but thou art † 1.47 a God ready to pardon, * 1.48 gracious and merciful, flow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not▪

Yea, * 1.49 when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Aegypt, and had wrought great provocations▪

Yet thou in thy manifold mercies, forsookest them not in the wilderness a 1.50: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the * 1.51 pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

Thou gavest also thy * 1.52 good spirit b 1.53, to instruct them, and with-heldest not thy * 1.54 manna from their mouth, and gavest them * 1.55 water for their thirst.

Yea, * 1.56 forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their * 1.57 cloths waxed not old, and their feet swelled not c 1.58.

Moreover, thou gavest them kingdoms, and na∣tions, and didst divide them into corners d 1.59: so they possessed the land of Sihon * 1.60 and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concer∣ning which, thou hadst promised to their fathers that they should go in to possess it.

So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hand, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them † 1.61 as they would.

And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, ‖ 1.62 wells digged, vine∣yards, and olive-yards, and † 1.63 fruit-trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and * 1.64 became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness e 1.65.

Nevertheless, they were disobedient, and rebel∣led against thee, & * 1.66 cast thy law behind their backs f 1.67, and slew thy * 1.68 prophets, which testified against them, to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provoca∣tions.

* 1.69 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them, and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven: and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.

But after they had rest, † 1.70 they did evil again be∣fore thee! therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned and cried unto thee, thou hear∣dest them from heaven, and many times didst thou de∣liver them, according to thy mercies.

And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proud∣ly, and hearkned not unto thy commandments, but sin∣ned against thy judgments (which if a man do, he shall live in them f 1.71) and † 1.72 withdrew the shoulder, and har∣dened their neck g 1.73, and would not hear.

Yet many years didst thou † 1.74 forbear them h 1.75, and testifiedst * 1.76 against them by thy spirit † 1.77 in thy pro∣phets i 1.78: yet would they not give ear k 1.79: therefore ga∣vest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.* 1.80

Nevertheless for thy great mercies sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them, for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

32. Now there ore our God, the great, * 1.81 the migh∣ty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy l 1.82: let not all the † 1.83 trouble seem little before thee m 1.84 † 1.85 that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests▪ and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people since the time of the kings of Assyria n 1.86, unto this day.

Howbeit, thou art just in all that is brought up∣on us: for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly.

Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fa▪thers kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments, and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testifie against them.

For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them o 1.87, neither turned they from their wicked works.

Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers, to eat the fruit thereof, and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it p 1.88.

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us q 1.89, because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cat∣tel r 1.90, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

And because of all this s 1.91, we make a sure cove∣nant t 1.92▪ and write it, and our princes, Levites, and priests † 1.93 seal unto it.
