CHAP. XIII.
ON that day a 1.1 † 1.2 they read in the book of Mo∣ses in the † 1.3 audience of the people b 1.4; and therein was found written, * 1.5 that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God c 1.6 for ever;
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but * 1.7 hired Balaam against them that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.
Now it came to pass when they heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multi∣tude d 1.8.
And before † 1.9 this Eliashib the priest e 1.10 † 1.11 having the oversight of the chamber f 1.12 of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah g 1.13:
And he had prepared for him a great chamber g 1.14; where aforetime they laid the meat-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, († 1.15 which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters) and the offerings of the priests.
But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem h 1.16: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Ba∣bylon, came I unto the king i 1.17, and † 1.18 after certain days k 1.19 ‖ 1.20 obtained I leave of the king:
And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
And it grieved me sore l 1.21, therefore I cast forth all the houshold stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.
Then I commanded, and they cleansed the cham∣bers m 1.22; and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat-offering and the frankin∣cense.
And I perceived that * 1.23 the portions of the Le∣vites had not been given them n 1.24: for the Levites and the singers that did the work, were fled every one * 1.25 to his field o 1.26.
Then contended I with the rulers o 1.27, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken p 1.28? And I gathered them together q 1.29, and set them in their † 1.30 place r 1.31.
Then brought all Judah the tithe s 1.32 of the corn, and the new wine, and the oil unto the ‖ 1.33 treasuries.
And I made treasurers over the treasuries, She∣lemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe t 1.34, and of the Levites Pedajah: and † 1.35 next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful u 1.36, and † 1.37 their office was to distribute unto their brethren x 1.38.
