No Prayers for the Dead, in the modern notion of Papists.

For, though we find Prayers for the Dead, yet they were not in the nature of Propitiation for their Sins, or to procure Relaxation from their Sufferings: but were onely an honourable Commemoration of their Memo∣ries, and a Sacrifice of Thanksgiving for their Salvation. Thus St. Cuth∣bert, after he had seen the Soul of one Hadwalduse carried by Angels into Heaven, did celebrate Obsequies of Prayers in his behalf.
