XXVII.

That in or about the Month of August last, he was made Lieutenant General of all his Maje∣sties Forces in the Northern parts against the Scots, and being at York, did in the Month of September, by his own Authority, and without a∣ny lawful Warrant, impose a Tax on his Maje∣sties Subjects in the County of York, of 8 d. per diem, for maintenance of every Souldier of the Trained Bands of that County, which sums of Money he caused to be levied by force. And to the end to compel his Majesties Subjects out of fear and terrour to yield to the payment of the same, He did declare that he would commit them that refused the payment thereof, and the Soul∣diers should be satisfied out of their Estates; and they that refused it, were in very little better con∣dition than of High Treason.
