IN THE CASE

Intentio Nominum, & Interpetatio eorum.

1. MOnsieur Avidus is the greedy gripeing pa∣tron who will not part with the Benefice, but with a Si quis plus dare voluerit.

2. Sir Symon Magus is the Simoniacall patron▪ Nota, He is descended of no great Gentry, but as∣cended from a Kna. to a Kni. He lately made two purchases, the one of his Knighthood, the other of his advowson.

3. B. the Cleark of Monsieur Avidus is noted for an ingrossing Benificer, who though he had not passed one degree in the Vniversity, yet boldly enter∣prized to set upon two Benifices in the Country, Au∣daces fortuna juvat.

4. The Vniversity of Cambridg are patrons by the law of 3. Jacobi, but bestowed the Benefice on a sot without, reason, Sapiunt generaliter, inipi∣nt particulariter.

5. Sir Ignoramus intended for the Vniversities Catacoustichon a generall noted Coxcomb, a re∣semblance

of the Actor which they bestowed on the Innes of Court, Ignoramus.

5. The Eves{que} Eslie, in English, signifi∣eth a Bishop Elect, but not sacred; I will say no more to but Nolo se vlterius tangere.

7. The Four presentations comming so neere toge∣ther, shew to us that many Clarkes at some times ride poast▪ for one Benefice, Poast for a Benefice.

8. The awarding of the Jure patronatus, presents unto us pretty device to set many Clarks together by the eares whilest a third person get it from them all.

9. Doctor Apollos is a grave and learned Di∣vine, the Kings Chaplaine, to demonstrate, that though there be many Knaves and fooles, yet there be some wise learned men also.

10. Master Grace is intended the flourishing ig∣norant favourite, who by his friend or his purse (and not for his desert in Learning) attaineth a Bene∣fice: he is a resemblance of the Law-favourite, who for his Learning deserves rather to be an Auditor, then an ignorant Orator; Sed fortuna favet fatuis, Insomuch that he is a Preacher or Practiser of For∣tune; the truth whereof is, that the decease of his friend is the end of his practise, Amicus Usque ad mortem: And of this Ignoramus, and Sir Igno∣ramus I motto thus: Pari jugo sociantur asi∣ni.

11. I Called the Woman Parcella, and set her out for a Schismatique, to this end, because a certaine woman (I will not name) but one professing to be a Brow∣nist, took a Journey to Amsterdam; & after 2 yeares stay she returned againe with Child to her husband,

which sheweth though she be a weak vessell to graft Religion on, yet she is a strong stock to get a Religi∣ous child on, vera filia Matris.

In all these, I only aimed at the iniqui∣ty of the time, and by their Names to de∣monstrate their qualities; I suppose that no Man or Woman can religiously find them∣selves grieved at me, If they doe, I say no more to them, but Adsum qui dixi, In me convertite tela.
