The XXXI. Chap.

I Made a couenaunt w^t myne eyes, y^t I [ A] wolde not loke vpō a dāsell. For how greate a porciō shal I haue of God frō aboue? & what enheritaūce frō y^e Almigh¦tie on hie? As for the vngodly & he y^t ioyneth himself to y^e cōpani of wicked doers shal not

[ B] Farre be it from God, that he shulde med¦le with wickednesse: and farre be it from the Allmightie, y^t he shulde medle with vnrigh∣tuous dealynge: but he rewardeth the wor∣kes of man, and causeth euery man to fynde acordinge to his wayes. For sure it is, that God cōdemneth no man wrongeously, and the iudgmēt of the Allmightie is not vnrigh¦tuous. Who ruleth the earth in his steade? Or, whom hath he set to gouerne the whole worlde? To whom hath he geuen his herte, for to drawe his sprete and breth vnto him? All flesh shal come together vnto naught, & all mē shal turne agayne vnto earth. Yf thou now haue vnderstōdinge, heare what I saye and herken to the voyce of my wordes.

Maye he be made whole, that loueth no right? Yf thou were a very innocent man, shuldest thou then be punyshed? For he is e∣uen the same, y^t knoweth the rebellious kyn∣ges, & sayeth to princes: Vngodly men are ye He hath no respecte vnto the personnes of y^e lordly, & regardeth not the rich more thē poo¦re. For they be all the worke of his hondes. [ C] In the twincklinge off an eye shall they be slayne: and at mydnight, when the people & the tyrauntes rage, then shal they perish, ād be taken awaye with out hondes. And why•• his eyes loke vpon the wayes of man, and he seyth all his goinges. There is no darcknes ner thicke shadowe, y^t can hyde the wicked doers from him. For no mā shalbe suffred to go into iudgment with God.

Many one, yee innumerable doth he pu∣nyshe and setteth other in their steades. For he knoweth their euell & darcke workes, ther∣fore shal they be destroyed. They that were in y^e steade of Seers, dealt like vngodly mē. Therfore turned they back traytorously and vnfaithfully frō hī, & wolde not receaue his wayes. In so moch that they haue caused y^e voyce of the poore to come vnto him, & now he heareth the cōplaynte of soch as are in ne¦cessite. Yf he delyuer & graunte pardō, who will iudge or condemne? But yf he hyde a∣waye his countenaunce, who wil turne it a∣boute agayne, whether it be to the people or to eny man? For the wickednesse & synne of y^e [ D] people, he maketh an ypocrite to reigne ouer thē. For so moch then as I haue begonne to talke of God, I wil not hyndre the. Yf I ha∣ue gone amysse, enfourme me: yf I haue do∣ne wronge, I wil leaue of. Wilt thou not ge¦ue a reasonable answere? Art thou afrayed of eny thinge, ••eynge thou begānest first to speake, & not I? For els the men of vnderstō¦dinge & wisdome that haue herde me, might saye: What cāst thou speake? As for Iob he hath nether spoken to the purpose ner wyse∣ly. O father, let Iob be well tryed, because he he hath turned himself to y^e wicked: yee abo¦ue his synnes he hath blasphemed, which of∣fence he hath done euen before vs, in y^t he stryueth agaynst God with his wordes.
