Slaughterhouse, place where butchers kill their livestock. [1] See Slaughtering.
1. Contemporary French uses the term abattoir, which according to Robert is first attested in 1806. The word abatis, now spelled abattis, had by end of the 20th century mostly disappeared from general use. Originally meaning massacre, it came to signify large killing of game (1549) and slaughterhouse (1690). The metonymic meaning of parts of animals after slaughtering is attested in 1680, specifically for poultry in 1690.
