Alphabet, contents , index , or directory of a large book. These are the various names that Merchants, Tradesmen, Bankers, and bookkeepers give to a kind of register consisting of twenty-four numbered pages, each one marked with a large letter of the alphabet , in their proper order, beginning with A , and ending with Z .
This alphabet in which are written the first and last names of those with whom one does business, and the page numbers in the large account book recording debits and credits, make it easy and painless to locate the places in the large book that are needed.
Alphabet is also used, though less commonly, for the simple tables placed at the front of other books, which Tradesmen use in their business affairs, whether single-entry or double-entry bookkeeping. See Book.
