Variegation: variegated stripes of diverse colours which blend with the principal colour of a flower, making it multicoloured.

In order to be beautiful, anemones, ranunculuses, carnations, roses, and tulips should be diversely coloured: one says this flower is ‘variegated’.

‘Variegation’ is also used with reference to some of the foliage in a parterre.
