The top of this Plate represents a bookbinder-gilder’s [5] workshop, where several workers are occupied; one in a, in edge-gilding; another in b, in pressing the roll on the board of a book, near him is the finishing stove for heating the irons; a worker [6] in c, in laying gold on the spines of volumes.

5. In England the same worker would be called a finisher , but because the title Relieur-Doreur comes specifically from the French guild system and the laws that dictated who may do which job, I have left it in the somewhat awkward-sounding direct translation.
