Levity. This word has two meanings; it is taken to mean the opposite of grave , important ; and it is in this sense that one says light services , light errors . In its other meaning, levity is said of the character of men who do not stick strictly to their principles or to their habits, and whose decisions are determined by the interests of a moment. One calls ‘ levities’ the actions which are the effect of this kind of character: levity of mind is sometimes taken as a compliment; normally it excludes coherence, profundity, and application; but it excludes neither wisdom nor liveliness; and when it is accompanied with a bit of imagination, it has some beauty.
