Rights/Permissions for Digital Images

We provide access to digital collections for education and research purposes where materials are in the public domain, the University of Michigan Library or the Regents of the University of Michigan hold rights, the Library has permission to make materials accessible, or as an exercise of fair use, where there are no known restrictions on use. In some cases we may limit access to authorized users because of copyright concerns or conditions associated with a particular gift of material to the Library. We identify known conditions or contacts for permissions as possible. 'Authorized users' include current faculty, staff and students plus walk-in users who are physically present in the library.

In many cases the Library does not hold copyright in items in the collections, nor images displayed online. Users of the University of Michigan Library website assume full responsibility for their use of the materials presented by the Library, including obtaining any required permissions from copyright or other rights holders. Researchers must make their own assessments of rights in light of their intended use.

Permission to use images and possible fees may be required by the copyright owner- independently of the Library. It is users' responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library's collections. Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the permission of the copyright owners. We are eager to hear from any rights owners, so that we may obtain accurate information. Upon request, we'll remove material from public view while we address a rights issue.
