A.D. 1138/9. Grant to Godstow, by Robert, bishop of Exeter, of a pension of £1 out of Farring|don church

THE sentence of þis chartur is þat Richard [In error for Robert (Chichester), bishop of Exeter 1138-55. See no. 163.] , bi þe grace of god bisshop of exetur, gafe & grauntid to þe holi minchons of Godestowe xl. shillings, into perpetuel almis euiri yer, þat is to sei, in þe churche of owre ladi of Gloucetur, xx shillings, & in þe churche of ferendon, xx. shillings: & is with-oute date.

Confirmacion of Robert, bisshop of exetur, I-made to Richard, clerke, fitȝ turtain of the churche of farindon excepte xx. shillings.

About 1140. Reserva|tion of the pension to Godstow, on pre|sentation of a new incumbent to Farring|don church.

THE sentence of þis confirmacion is, þat Robert, bisshop of exetur, gafe & grauntid to Robert, clerke, fitȝ turtain, in-to perpetuel almis þe churche of farendon excepte alonli xx. shillings, þe whiche he gafe yerli of þe rentes of þe same churche to þe minchons of godestowe in perpetual almis: & for-asmuch as he willid to be sure & stronge, he strengthid hit with his writinge & with his seele: and is with-oute date.

Chartur of arnulph, bisshop of lexetur [Sic: for episcopus Lexoviensis (of Lisieux), 1154-72.] , con|firminge þe gifte of xx. shillings of þe churche of Farendon.

About 1160. Confirma|tion to Godstow, of no. 207, by Arnulph, the incum|bent.

THE sentence of þis chartur is þat arnulph, bisshop of lexouer, grauntid to þe abbas & minchons of Godestowe xx shillings yerli to be paid to hem of þe churche of farendon, in-to perpetuel almis, at mihelmas, euin as Robert, bisshop of exetur, þe whiche

THE sentence of þis chartur is, þat Richard, bisshop of winchester, willid to be knowe to archedecuns, denis, & to all þe clergie & pepul beinge þorow his bisshopriche, þat for þe loue of god, at þe peticion of worthi kinge henre kinge of I[n]glonde, [he] grauntid & confirmid with his writinge to þe holi minchons of Godestowe xx shillings in þe churche of farendon yerli to be take, euin as goode Richard, sumtime bisshop of exetur, laufulli grauntid & confirmid with his writinge as he sawe & rad: & is with-oute date.

About 1186. Confirma|tion to Godstow, of no. 207, by John, bishop of Exeter 1185-91.

THE sentence of þis chartur is, þat Iohn, bisshop of exetur, was plesid & well paide [The Latin has (donacionem) 'gratam et ratam habere.'] of þe gifte & confirmacion of Richard [Robert.] his predecessor þat he grauntid to þe holi minchons of Gode|stowe of þe rente of xx. shillings yerli to be take of þe churche of farendon at mihelmas: & þerfore he strengthid hit with the auttorite of his writinge & þe surete of his seele: & is with-oute date.

A sentencial iugement of þe XX. shillings of þe churche of farindon.

1247, July 9. Godstow nuns obtain a decision of the pope's commis|sioners con|firming to them their 20s. yearly pension out of Farring|don church, and bind|ing the parson of Farringdon to pay it for ever.

THE sentence of þis iugement shortli is, þat a delegacie was made to þe prior of Einisham, bitwene maister Iohn, person of Farindon, & þe abbas & couent, to determe þe riht bitwene hem for xx. shillings of rent yerli to be paid of þe churche of farindon, of þe whiche yerli pension þei had be in possession in time oute of minde, fro þe paiment of þe whiche xx. shillings þe fore-seide person had cesid bi þe space of v. yere, & þerfore þei askid him to be compellid þerof afturwarde, & also þe arrerages; & þei shewid her possession & askinge, sauinge to hem þe benefice of lawe. At the laste, aftur mani respites of deliberacion grauntid, moni excepcioun & defensis & replicasions I-purposid, & a bisi tretinge I-made bitwene hem, bi þe com|mune assent of boþe perteis, þei submittid hem to þe ordinans of þe fore-seide delegate; & he, bi þe auctorite of þe pope committid & also ordinarie to him, of þe consent of boþe, & councell of wise-men & of men of lawe, þe processe bi-fore had & all oþer thinges requisite, ordeinid þat þe fore-seide maistur Iohn sholde pai in þe name of þe seide churche of farindon for euer þe fore-seide pension of xx shillings yerli at too termis of þe yere to þe fore-seide abbas & Couent, biginninge þe firste terme at mihelmas þat was next & at estur next folowinge, & for þe arereges þe same person sholde pai xx shillings. Also þat þis pronuncinge & ordeininge sholde be sure & stronge, þe bothe pertis consentid for hem-selfe & her successours þat he miht compelle, bi oure delegat & ordinari power, þe parte þat wolde be ageiniste þis ordinaunce to þe kepinge of þis pro|nuncinge & ordeininge bi þe censur of þe churche. In-to witnes of þis he sette his seele to þis writinge, I-made like a chartur, I-actid & do þe yer of our lorde Millesimo CCxlvij, þe twiusdai next aftur þe translacion of seint Thomas þe martir.
