THE ABBEY BY THE SKELL
IN the abbey by the Skell,O the lapsing of the yearsSince the last monastic bellSounded sad upon the earsOf the holy men who thereBowed in final praise and prayer!
All day long the doves make moanIn the over-topping tower; From the crevices of stoneWaves the grass and nods the flower; And yet still doth grandeur dwellIn the abbey by the Skell.
Gone are porch and pillar; goneAre the windows grand that gave,At the blossom-burst of dawn,Such a glory to the nave,Such a soft, celestial spellTo the abbey by the Skell.
descriptionPage 19
Mourns the immemorial yewIn the cloisters green and wideFor the brother band that grewBy the singing river's side; Now but one its tale can tellOf the abbey by the Skell.
What a sermon here is writBy the ancient hand of Time!We have paused to ponder it,And would weave the text in rhymeEre we breathe our low farewellTo the abbey by the Skell.
By a miracle of birthBeauty buddeth from decay,So a godly work on earthNever fadeth quite away,Though it be not tangibleLike the abbey by the Skell.
